We went to Ottawa a couple of weeks ago and had a nice visit
with Marion, who turned out to be recovering from pneumonia! She was on the mend when we saw her, and I
got a nice picture of her.
In the meantime, we have been experiencing much more winter
than we ever expected. I know, I know, I
am whining. The new outdoor workout room
has guaranteed a big improvement in upper body strength, although my knuckles
tend to drag a little when I walk now.
You see, snow shoveling now consists of first shoveling off the tops
of the snowbanks and then throwing a lot more snow up on top. And when I stop to admire my progress it
starts snowing again.
The birds and beasts are not deterred. I have my woodpecker feeder up, and the Downy
and Hairy Woodpeckers can clean it out in one day.
The squirrels continue to come to the back door for peanuts
(poor shot, but there is way too much contrast between the black rodent and the
white snow).
I have had to make few adjustments for the poor rodents. The squirrel feeder, which is almost 3 feet
above ground, is now barely tipping over the top of the snow. And yes, I had to shovel a path to the
feeders so that I could walk safely out and back.
Fresh snow does look lovely on the trees, but......
We have a very technical snow measuring device called the
Snow Stick. Here is the most recent
measurement of snow on the ground—sigh!
So, we decided to add up the amount of fresh snowfall we have had in the
first 15 days of February. Only 31½ inches! I would talk about the other recreational
activities we are enjoying, but if we are not shoveling snow, then we are
resting from shoveling snow.
This whining will now stop.
We leave for 2 weeks in Hawaii on Tuesday, Feb 21, so stay tuned for
updates on malloysatlarge.blogspot.ca!
